APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN: 2024 - 2025 School Year
The Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program (ASMP) is currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and STEM professionals to mentor elementary and middle school students with the goal of inspiring a lifelong interest in STEM. In partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), participants are placed at one of our many partnering school sites around New York City and commit to teaching one-hour sessions each week, over 10 weeks.Participating Mentors receive training in STEM curriculum and youth development, and work with a site staff partner to implement weekly one-hour sessions from Spring: February 17th - June 13th, 2025 (10 sessions total). ASMP Mentors gain:
-Science communication and leadership skills
-Mentoring and teaching experience
-Opportunities to network and participate in professional development events
-A stronger connection to their communityOne year complimentary membership to NYAS
-Receive a $500 stipend at the completion of 10-sessions along with up to $150 in travel reimbursement

Spring 2025 Program Timeline
- January 25th: Applications for the Spring term close (rolling interviews and acceptance).
- February 1st: Mentor onboarding begins (virtual)
- Saturday, February 8th, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM: Scientists Curriculum Workshop (in-person).
- February 24th - February 28th: ASMP Class Team Planning Week (30-minute virtual meeting).
- February 17th - June 13th, 2025: Weekly in-class sessions begin. Mentors will lead 10x 1-hour sessions, meeting once a week during this period.
- Early April (TBD April 1st or April 2nd, 7:00 - 8:30 PM): Midpoint check-ins (1.5-hour virtual workshop).
- June 13th, 2025: ASMP Spring 2025 in-class sessions end.
- June 21st: Certificates and stipends are awarded.
