APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN: 2025–2026 School Year
The Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program (ASMP) is currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and STEM professionals to mentor elementary and middle school students with the goal of inspiring a lifelong interest in STEM. In partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), mentors are placed at one of our many partnering school sites around New York City and commit to teaching one-hour sessions each week, over 10 weeks.
Participating Mentors receive training in STEM curriculum and youth development, and work with a site staff partner to implement weekly one-hour sessions from February through June 2026 (Spring semester - 10 sessions total).

Science communication and leadership skills

A stronger connection to their community
One-year complimentary membership to NYAS
$500 stipend upon successful completion of 10 sessions, plus up to $150 in travel reimbursement

January 20, 2026: Applications close (rolling interviews and acceptance)
February 2, 2026: Mentor onboarding begins (virtual)
Saturday, February 7, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM: Scientists Curriculum Workshop (in-person)
February 9 - 13, 2026 – : ASMP Class Team Planning Week (30-minute virtual meeting)
February 23, 2026 – June 12, 2026: Weekly in-class sessions begin. Mentors will lead 10x 1-hour sessions, meeting once a week during this period.
March 24 or 25, 2026 (TBD): Midpoint check-ins (1.5-hour virtual workshop)
June 12, 2026: Final in-class session
June 19, 2026: Certificates and stipends are awarded
