APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN: 2025–2026 School Year

The Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program (ASMP) is currently recruiting undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and STEM professionals to mentor elementary and middle school students with the goal of inspiring a lifelong interest in STEM. In partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), mentors are placed at one of our many partnering school sites around New York City and commit to teaching one-hour sessions each week, over 10 weeks.

Participating Mentors receive training in STEM curriculum and youth development, and work with a site staff partner to implement weekly one-hour sessions from  October through January 2027 (Fall semester - 10 sessions total).

ASMP Mentors gain:

  • Science communication and leadership skills

  • Mentoring and teaching experience

  • Opportunities to network and participate in professional development events

  • A stronger connection to their community

  • One-year complimentary membership to NYAS

  • $500 stipend upon successful completion of 10 sessions, plus up to $150 in travel reimbursement

    Applications close (rolling interviews and acceptance)

  • August 31, 2026
    Mentor onboarding begins (virtual)

  • Sept 2 – 30, 2026
    ADP onboarding + background clearance process

  • Saturday, September 26, 2026 | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
    Scientists Curriculum Workshop (in-person)

  • Sept 28 – Oct 2, 2026
    ASMP Class Team Planning Week (30-minute virtual meeting)

  • October 5, 2026 – January 29, 2027:
    Weekly in-class sessions begin. Mentors will lead 10x 1-hour sessions, meeting once a week during this period.

  • Nov 11 or 12, 2026 (TBD)
    Midpoint check-ins (1.5-hour virtual workshop)

  • January 29, 2027
    Final in-class session

  • February 12, 2027
    Certificates & stipends distributed
